What we do

At Ancestral Odyssey we are trying to bring your past to your living room, at a sensible price. There are plenty of Genealogists out there who will produce similar products to ourselves but at nearly three times the price. In this case the adage “you get what you pay for” is not true! Our prices are so low because our researchers love what they do and do not feel that people should pay over the odds for what is essentially their own history.

If you have already researched your own family tree we can create an A1 Poster with your tree on it for £20 each and for an extra £30 we can frame it for you in any of the following colour frames; Walnut, Oak, Black or White. The frames are fitted with Plastic safety glass, mdf backing board and wall hanging hooks.

Our A1 posters are put together after a research time of between 50 and 70 hours (over 2 weeks) but our prices are fixed at £95 for a Single Line (back to about 1800, Maternal or Paternal)  and £115 for a Full Line (back to about 1800, Maternal and Paternal). The posters are printed on Standard 250gsm Silk and are very robust. Additional posters cost £20 each. For an extra £30 each the posters can be framed.

Our Single Line (back to about 1800, Maternal or Paternal) Hard Cover books (average of 80 pages, A4 landscape, on Silk paper, 170gsm, digitally printed in colour throughout) are produced after a research time of between 125 and 175 hours (5 to 8 weeks)and priced at £395. With this price you will get 3 Hard Cover books and 3 A1 posters. Additional books cost £29 each.

Our Full Package (back to about 1800, Paternal and Maternal Lines) Hard Cover books (average of 130 pages, A4 landscape, on Silk paper, 170gsm, digitally printed in colour throughout) are produced after a research time of between 200 and 300 hours (6 to 10 weeks) and priced at £695. With this price you will get 3 Hard Cover books and 3 A1 posters. Additional books cost £39 each.

We can research family lines as far back as the 17th century in some cases. If this is something you would like, the prices are dependent on how far back we can go. When you come to the end of a family line it is fairly quickly established that you can go no further. In this case the following prices apply:

A1 posters are put together after a research time of between hours 70 and 100 hours (2 to 4 weeks) and are priced at a rate of £2 per hour spent on research after 70 hours (to a maximum of 100 hours) on top of the Standard A1 poster costs. For example, if your Single Line A1 poster resulted in an extra 15 hours research the cost would be £125. Which breaks down as £95 for the original research and £30 for the extra 15 hours researched. The maximum charge would be for 30 hours even if it took more hours to research. So the maximum cost of an A1 poster would be £155 for a Single Line and £175 for a Full Line. Additional posters are £20 each.

When it comes to the Single Line books the extra hour research rate is £3 an hour after 175 hours. The maximum charge is for 50 hours. So the most you would pay is £545 for your 3 books and 3 posters. Additional books £35 each.

For the Full Package books the extra hour research rate is  £3 per hour  after 300 hours . The maximum charge is for 100 hours. So the most you would pay is £995 for your 3 books and 3 posters. Additional books £50 each.

When researching the genealogy of a family, finding evidence is the aim. When records were made it was not uncommon for a name to be spelt completely differently, the writer would often spell it phonetically, creating variations in surname spellings. In the book and posters what might look like a typing error in a name is just the reproduction of how it was spelt in the various Records.

However, the further back in recorded time you go the evidence can become blurry.  When this happens cross referencing, with other family members that might be present on other records, is done to try and tie them together. Our Tree’s are put together using these techniques. Each family member has had at least two and preferably up to three connections. On those pages with the family tree sections where you see the letters FRR it means “further research required”. As a result, this is the most probable family tree for your family. There is always a lot more research that could be done, as more records are released or found, so this may not be the complete Tree.

The records for those ancestors that do not have accurate, or no Dates of Birth or Death, are left blank because there was not sufficient evidence to include them.

Before we build your Family Tree we will ask you for a little information, see Family Facts, and then spend some time to see if it is feasible to research your Tree. In some cases the information may not be retrievable (lost, destroyed or protected) and we would not be able to fully research your Tree. If this is the case we would discuss whether you should engage us. If it looks likely that we could not go back at least 150 years and you still want your Tree done then we would discuss a suitable price reduction.
